Fundraising
The alumni association’s first major
fundraiser kicked off with the sale of the CCHS Alumni Association
Directory. The 500 directories, which were published in 1997, recognized
graduates from 1896-1996. With
the profit realized from the sale of these directories the association was
able to purchase the second section of the Multiplex Graduation Picture
Display Rack. The Class of 1998
generously donated the first section of the display rack.
The directory project was “in the black” the very first year.
Directories are now available year round in a CD format and proceeds
from the sales fund our website.
In 2002 local members took on the major
task of managing the fall concession stands for the Junior Varsity Football,
Junior High Football and Junior High Volleyball games.
By 2005 the workers were a well-known fixture at games and had served
hundreds of sloppy joes, hot dogs and candy bars.
Letters and calls went out in early September to local alumni members
who had shown an interest in the stands.
These loyal members not only volunteered to run the stands, but many
contributed to the purchase of inventory as well.
The menu offered a wide variety of soda pop, snacks, entire meal
deals and of course popcorn. With our changing Nebraska weather we never
knew if we’d sell soda or hot chocolate.
We received many compliments from the fans, coaches and athletes over
the years. We were asked anything from providing a bag of ice for an injured
player, giving directions to out-of-town visitors, and on occasion warming
up a frosty “pigskin” in the shack for the football team. Approximately 9
stands were managed in a 3 to 4 week period in September and October.
Volunteer members transported carloads of stored inventory hours
before the games began…yes that’s games.
Often there were two games taking place simultaneously…one inside the
gym and the other at the field.
Thankfully it didn’t happen too often.
When the final buzzer sounded the inventory was packed back up and
hauled off to await the next game, which was more often than not, only days
away. The crowds at these games
couldn’t rival those at Varsity games, but nonetheless we did realize a
small profit at each game. But
more importantly we showed that we cared about the school enough to provide
this service with consistency and a smile.
The stands provided volunteers an opportunity to stay in touch with
students and staff members. It
was hard work, but the rewards were great.
The pace was fast, but the job was done in 3 or 4 weeks and we
honestly found ourselves looking forward to the next fall; contemplating
what worked and didn’t work, what sold and didn’t sell, and the changes we’d
make to the menu before we took up the challenge again the next year.
